Many teens are eager to experiment with the latest skincare trends their favorite skinfluencer is recommending on TikTok, but some products may be too harsh for young skin. Both teens and parents are wondering which skincare products are OK to use and which aren't. Improper use can lead to skin irritation – and even new concerns you didn't have before. In this post, we'll give you the do's and dont's to treating young skin.
Young skin only needs the basics
Teens don’t need strong Retinoids or Vitamin C. These showy actives may be fun to see on your fyp, but not the best choice for a teenager's skin that's still developing. At Smuuti Skin, we recommend sticking to the basics – a simple routine to keep your skin clean, hydrated and glowing! ✨
What about skincare for pre-teens or kids?
Although our products are created with young, sensitive skin in mind, we don't recommend our skincare products (or any skincare, for that matter) for kids under the age of 10. Kids have thinner skin that can become sensitized, irritated or even develop allergies if skincare is introduced at a very young age.
Preteens (10–12 years old) often don't need skincare either. If a preteen wants to use skincare despite this, Smuuti Skin recommends only going with a simple 2-step routine: a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer.
An example routine for young skin
At night, a gentle cleanser and a face cream is all you need. In the morning, pair this routine with a sunscreen – we recommend using it daily in the Spring and Summer. 🌞
1. Cleanser 🫧
Smuuti Skin Watermelon Sorbet Balm is a great cleansing product for young skin. It doesn’t dry out the skin or contain any harsh ingredients, but helps remove makeup and dirt effortlessly.
2. Face moisturizer 🧴
Watermelon Jelly Cream is a great lightweight moisturizer for most, and Peach Barrier Cream is a good alternative if your skin is on the dry side.
Bonus: Additional steps
Additionally, you can try a hydrating toner or a Hyaluronic Acid serum for a boost of extra hydration. Layering products from lightest to thickest is a great tip to make the most of your routine.
Smuuti Skin's gentle toners and serums are the kind of products that are great for those who want to experiment with skincare – without having to worry about irritation.
How to treat first blemishes... and what NOT to do
Hormones can cause your skin to develop blemishes, pimples or blackheads – or all of them! The #1 rule is to not squeeze them (we know, it's tempting!) 🙅♀️ Squeezing pimples and blackheads can allow bacteria to enter the skin, making the breakout worse. Luckily, there are lots of other things you can do to help with blemishes.
We recommend gentle exfoliation with Pear Cleansing Balm and Pear Cleansing Gel. Exfoliating will help get rid of dead skin cells, help dissolve clogged pores and reduce sebum production overall. All of these things will help treat current pimples and prevent more breakouts in the future.
In addition to skincare, lifestyle plays a big role in healthy skin. For more tips on how to care for your skin more than just skincare products, tune in to Skin Deep Podcast episode 7: Beauty From the Inside Out 🎧
If you suffer from painful breakouts no matter what you do or are otherwise struggling with your skin, we recommend turning to a dermatologist.
Only adult skin needs actives
Adult skin from 20 years and up can handle stonger exfoliants, Vitamin C and even Retinoids to boost their skincare routine. Even so, get the basics right first and add stronger actives in whenever needed. With their gentle formulas, Smuuti products work amazingly as a base routine for stronger active ingredients.
