Skincare Basics

Don’t know where to start? These skincare basics everyone should know by heart.

Skincare steps

The basic skin care steps are make-up removal, cleansing, treatments for skin concerns, skin hydration, skin moisturization and sun protection.

The morning skin care routine can include any of these, excluding make-up removal, and the evening skin care routine can include any of these, excluding sunscreen.

A skin care routine starts with cleansing and ends with a moisturizer or sunscreen, but you can put the other steps in the order you want. It is often recommended to apply these from lightest to thickest consistency.

Building a skincare routine

Building your own skin care routine can be challenging. It depends on the number of steps you want, your skin type, skin concerns and personal preferences.

A good place to start is to choose a cleansing product and a moisturizer, then think about whether you need anything else in particular. You can also always ask us for help choosing products!

Cleansing

You can cleanse your skin using either one or two products. Double cleansing involves washing your face first with an oil-based cleanser (such as a cleansing balm or oil) and then following up with a water-based cleanser (like a gel, cream, or milk cleanser).

We recommend double cleansing especially if you wear makeup. This method ensures a deep, thorough cleanse by removing both oil-based and water-based dirt and makeup. However, if you don’t wear makeup or only use very light products, a single cleanse with a water-based cleanser is enough.

Our oil-based cleansing balm, Watermelon Sorbet Balm, effectively removes even waterproof makeup and is suitable for all skin types. For water-based cleansing, Pear Cleansing Gel and Peach Cleansing Cream take care of the dirt and grime.

Hydration & Moisture

The skin needs both water and oil. These are often referred to as hydration and moisture. Hydration refers to bringing water to the skin and moisturization refers to adding oil to the skin.

Hydration and/or moisture are added to the skin with toners, serums and creams.

All skin types benefit from hydration, but some people’s skin is especially dehydrated on the surface, meaning the skin lacks a lot of water. The Watermelon Dew line is especially helpful for surface dehydration.

Typically, dry skin doesn't produce enough oil on its own, so oil-based moisture is needed. We recommend our Peach Barrier line for dry skin.

If your skin is oily, you may not need oil-based moisture, as your skin naturally produces enough oil. This doesn't mean you should skip toners and creams – just opt for a more lightweight formula.

Exfoliation

The skin exfoliates naturally, but sometimes the skin needs a little help with removing excess dead skin cells, that can cause clogged pores and a dull, uneven complexion. Exfoliating acids are a good way to gently dissolve the adhesives of dead skin cells, allowing the skin cells to fall off on their own.

Exfoliating the skin helps brighten, smooth and clear the skin – all skin types can benefit from it.

How often should I exfoliate? This depends on the product and your skin type. For gentle products (like Pear Balance), most people can use these every day. For stronger exfoliants, 1-3 times a week is enough.

Skincare for all ages

Skincare for Pre-Teens | Under 15 Years

Before puberty, the skin likely doesn’t need any skincare products. However, if skincare is introduced, keep the routine simple – just a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer. Using sunscreen is also recommended during the spring and summer months, especially when spending time in the sun. Peach Cleansing Cream and Watermelon Jelly Cream are great options for young skin.

Skincare for Teenagers | 15+ Years

A good teenage skincare routine starts with the basics: cleansing, toner, and moisturizer. The first blemishes may appear, and for that, a pore-clearing cleanser like Pear Cleansing Gel may be added. An exfoliating toner like Pear Balance Toner may also help with clogged pores. Sunscreen is also a must!

Skincare for Adults | 20+ Years

As an adult, skincare still relies on the basic pillars, but additional concerns may arise. Issues like dullness, pigmentation, texture, and fine lines can be addressed a more comprehensive routine. Some form of exfoliation and a serum for your skin concerns is recommended. Sunscreen remains essential to help prevent skin concerns like pigmentation spots and premature aging.

Skincare for mature skin | 50+ years

As the skin ages, we recommend switching to more nourishing skincare formulas: for this, our Peach Barrier line is the perfect choice.

Skin types

Skin types are often divided into oily, dry, normal and combination skin.

Oily skin has more sebum production, and therefore oily skin get clogged more easily. More nourishing formulas often feel heavy on oily skin. Oily skin should also be cleansed more deeply.

Dry skin has too little sebum production. This type of skin should be treated with highly moisturizing products and it should be cleansed more gently.

In normal skin, sebum production is normal. However, normal skin can equally need hydration and can have other skin concerns. So remember to take care of normal skin as well, even if dryness or oiliness is not a problem.

Combination skin can be of many types. Combination skin has oily, dry and normal skin areas, and their location and the amount of oiliness and dryness varies from person to person. Combination skin should be treated according to what the skin has the most or make compromises. For example, you can use a milder cleansing product, but a gel-type moisturizer.

You can have sensitive skin in addition to having any other skin type. Sensitive skin reacts more strongly to cleansing products, strong active ingredients and allergens. The skin can also become sensitized if the skin barrier is damaged. Sensitive skin should be treated with gentle products without active ingredients and without perfumes or other allergens.

Figuring out your skin type

You can find out your skin type by cleaning your face and letting it dry for about 30 minutes.

  • After this, you can notice if your whole face gets oily. If yes, your skin type is oily.
  • If your whole face dries up and your skin tightens after 30 minutes, your skin type is dry.
  • If your face is not tightened and does not get oily, your skin type is normal.
  • If only part of your face gets oily and part remains dry, you have combination skin.
  • Sensitive skin can be recognized by the fact that it reacts easily to cleansing products, active ingredients or allergens, such as perfume.

Skin irritation

Skin irritation can be caused by a cleansing product that is too strong, by an active ingredient that is too strong, by an allergen that is not suitable for your skin, or by excessive use of any of these.

Dry, sensitive and young skin should be especially careful not to use too strong products that can damage the skin barrier.

Pear Gel Cleanser is suitable for most people to use daily, but some can only use the product occasionally and some do not tolerate acids at all.

Pear Balance Toner is also suitable for daily use for most people. If your skin is sensitive, you can start slow. Start with couple nights a week and build up tolerance for daily use.

We do not recommend the Pear Cleansing Gel or Pear Balance Toner for really young skin, because it is not yet needed and may cause unnecessary irritation.

Trying out new products

Whatever the product is, you should start using it with caution. It’s always possible that a product causes an allergic reaction, even if the product doesn’t contain any typical allergens or active ingredients.

Therefore, the product should always be tested first on, for example, the wrist or behind the ear, let it sit overnight (unless it is a wash-off product) and see if the product develops a reaction. This way you avoid the reaction occurring all over the face. We also recommend only adding one new product at a time, in case you get a reaction. This way you'll know which product was the culprit.
