How to build a hair care routine for your scalp type

How to build a hair care routine for your scalp type

Ever washed your hair in the morning and found your roots oily again by evening? Or maybe your scalp feels tight and itchy while your ends look dry and frizzy. The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all hair care routine. What your hair needs depends on your scalp.

The good news: once you know your scalp type, building a routine is easy. Here's how to find yours and what to do about it, with our Watermelon Gloss routine as your guide 🍉

Why your scalp matters

Healthy, glossy hair starts at the roots. Your scalp makes natural oils (sebum) that protect your hair, but everyone's scalp makes a different amount. Too much and your roots look flat and greasy. Too little and your scalp feels dry while your lengths lose their shine.

That's why the right hair care routine isn't just about which products you use. It's also about how often and how long you use them.

Which scalp type are you?

  • Normal: your hair feels fresh for a few days and isn't too oily or dry.
  • Dry scalp: your scalp feels tight, itchy or flaky, and your lengths feel dry.
  • Oily scalp: your hair gets greasy within a day or two after washing.
  • Oily scalp + dry ends: your roots get greasy, but your ends feel dry and frizzy.

Found yours? Here's your routine 🍉✨

Hair care routine for normal hair

Lucky you! Normal hair just needs a routine that keeps it balanced and glossy.

  1. Shampoo: as needed, aroundtwo to three times a week.
  2. Conditioner: leave on for 2–3 minutes, then rinse.
  3. Scalp Rinse: once a week for agloss-boosting detox.
  4. Hair Mist: on your endswhenever they need a refresh.

Tip: Think of the weekly Scalp Rinse as a reset button. It helps your scalp feel fresh and clean between washes, and your hair ends up shinier.

Hair care routine for dry scalp

A dry scalp needs gentler care and fewer washes. Washing too often can leave your scalp feeling even tighter.

  • Shampoo: only one to two times a week
  • Scalp Rinse: use it instead of shampoo on in-between days whenever your scalp needs a refresh
  • Conditioner: leave on for 3–5 minutes for extra softness
  • Hair Mist: use often to keep your hair feeling moisturized

Tip: Leaving your conditioner on a little longer gives dry hair more time to soak up moisture. Pop it on, then wash your body or face while you wait.

Hair care routine for oily scalp

Oily roots need regular cleansing to stay fresh, plus a little help to stretch the time between washes.

  • Shampoo: at least two to three times a week
  • Conditioner: leave on for 2–3 minutes, and keep it on your lengths and ends, away from your roots
  • Scalp Rinse: use it instead of shampoo on some days to keep your scalp feeling fresh for longer

Tip: Applying conditioner to your roots can make oily hair look flat faster. Start from the mid-lengths down.

Hair care routine for oily scalp and dry ends

The combo type! Your roots and your ends need difference things, so your routine has to balance both.

  • Shampoo: 2-3 times a week
  • Conditioner: Leave on for 2–3 minutes, focusing on your ends
  • Scalp Rinse: As needed to balance oily roots
  • Hair Mist: As needed to tame frizzy, dry ends

Tip: Think of your hair in two zones: fresh roots, soft ends. Scalp Rinse takes care of the top half and Hair Mist looks after the bottom.
