How to figure out your skin type

So, you've been staring at your reflection in the mirror, trying to figure out the mystery that is your skin. Is it oily? Dry? Combination? Don't worry bestie, we'll give you the step-by-step to finding your skin type.

The 4 skin types

To help you choose the right match for you, the first step is to find out your skin type. The four skin types are: normal, dry, oily and combination. Let's first take a look at each one:

Dry skin is characterized by flakiness and dryness – this is caused because your skin produces less sebum/oil. The opposite to this is oily skin, where your skin produces a bit too much of it, causing clogged pores, oiliness and blemishes. Combination skin is, as its name suggests, a combination of these two types: your skin might be oily in some places and dry in others.

Normal skin means you don't really suffer from any of these skin problems, and that your skin is generally happy. Lucky you!

In addition to one of these types, your skin may also be sensitive – this can mean it easily reacts to certain ingredients in skin care (such as added fragrance), changes in the environment or other factors.

How to find out your skin type

You can find out your skin type by cleansing your face and letting it dry for about 30 minutes without adding any products.
  • After this, you can notice if your whole face gets oily. If yes, your skin type is oily.
  • If your whole face dries up and your skin tightens, your skin type is dry.
  • If your face is not tight and does not get oily, your skin type is normal.
  • If only part of your face gets oily and part remains dry, you have combination skin.

I know my skin type – what now?

Knowing you skin type, you can now tailor your skincare routine to suit your skin's unique needs. Remember, your skin is as individual as you are, so be patient and experiment to find what works best for you!
